Consultancy Service

Susan Marshall providing advice to Gail as they both watch Gail’s daughter Amy ride a pony called “Gypsy”.

Purchasing a horse is a big investment and there are many things to consider. Unfortunately some people go in blind-folded and their investment can have disastrous effects. Let’s take an example of Mum and Dad wanting to buy their child their very first pony. They find a pony for sale and they all fall in love with it. They buy this pony and have dreams of their child having a great time riding it. But alas, when they get home they find that this cute little pony is uneducated, or it has a vice such as bucking or bolting. Not only could their child be injured, but their child certainly won’t learn to be a better rider. Put simply, the rider and the pony were mismatched.

So here’s how we can help. With the Consultancy Service we will firstly discuss the type of horse that you are looking for, such as breed, age, level of experience etc. If you are unsure what type of horse would be best suited for you, we can provide advice in this area. Secondly we will conduct a rider assessment. This may be just a question and answer session to establish the rider’s knowledge, or you may wish to book a riding lesson with us for a more thorough assessment. Assistance is then given in finding the right horse for you. Depending on its location, we are happy to accompany you to where the horse is kept and conduct an assessment on its characteristics such as behaviour, condition and experience. We can discuss the history of the horse with the owner and ask the relevant questions regarding its suitability. Some people may not know the right questions to ask or may find this part a little confronting. This is where we can act as the independent person.

There are three things that we will not do as part of the consultancy service:

  1. Give advice on the health or soundness of the horse. We can give general advice in this area however we recommend that you have a vet conduct a pre-purchase examination if you are concerned about these issues.
  2. Become involved in the price negotiation. We can give general advice as to what similar horses are selling for however the final purchase price shall be discussed between you and the owner.
  3. Ride the horse on your behalf. We encourage that the owner of the horse firstly ride the horse to show us what it can do. We can then conduct an assessment and advise whether it is suitable and safe for you to have a ride. If it is, we can then conduct an assessment of you riding the horse.

We will stay in touch with you throughout the process and provide as much advice as we can. It is our aim that we can assist you to find a suitably matched horse so that you can have many years of enjoyable rides!

This complete service is offered for a price of $225. It includes:

Riding Pony For Sale

Registered Australian Pony gelding “Craigston Alexander”

Sire: Minden Dakota
Dam: Mondiso Park Impression
DOB: 4/11/04

“Alex” was professionally broken in October 2008 by John Payne and his owner has had him in work ever since. He is good to wash, float and catch in the paddock and is easy to handle in every way. All Saddled Up

Vicky Lacey

“Susan offered to help me search for my new horse. She asked me to describe what I was looking for and posted an ad on her bulletin. Susan was very generous with her time and willing to discuss and give helpful advice.

Susan is well connected with other experienced horse people and it was through this networking that she discovered the perfect horse for me. "Archie” was not advertised for sale on any website, newspaper or magazine. I would have never known he existed if it wasn't for Susan.

He's beautiful, educated and quiet to ride, however the seller was particular about the home he went to as he's dominate on the ground. Susan talked to the seller for me and explained how she would teach me the groundwork I needed. Having reassurance by someone with so much credibility put the seller's mind at ease.

Archie was located interstate so the owner made a DVD of everything I requested to see. Susan happily watched this with me to ensure that this horse was suitable. After a vet check the sale went ahead and Archie was delivered. Susan's help continued where she gave me lessons in groundwork and lots of helpful advice.

I now own an extraordinary horse! Susan gave me the confidence I needed to purchase this wonderful animal, without actually meeting him first. I am grateful for the help she gave me every step of the way.” Vicky Lacey

Jaimie Foster riding over a jump on her grey coloured pony called “Misty”.

Margaret Foster, EFA instructor, Canberra

“Susan Marshall helped us find the 'perfect match' pony for my daughter. Jaimie was ready for that second pony type who was not too slow, not too fast , the list of criteria that it had to meet was a mile long and we'd exhausted all avenues at home in the Canberra district.

An internet search brought up two possibilities in the Caboolture area, and a further search of the EFA website provided Susan's contact details. One simple phone call to Susan saved me a great deal of travel, time and money; Susan was willing and qualified to 'try out' the two ponies and understood immediately what kind of mount we were looking for. I gave Susan a detailed description of what I needed to see on a video before considering a purchase, and the video was completed the following morning and posted immediately.

It contained clear views of all of the required transitions and paces, in varying environments, to display the pony in the scenarios in which it would be expected to work for me. Consequently, we purchased 'Misty', trucked her down to Canberra and have never looked back.

Jaimie, a reluctant jumper, has found a new love for showjumping within her confidence in her new pony, and has graduated through PC Mini E to E grade within 3 months. Her two baby brothers also ride Misty on the lead rein, so Misty is guaranteed a long-term life with our family. We would not have found Misty if not for Susan Marshall, and I'm ever thankful to have made that call and asked for her help.”
